Jeff Healey was born at Toronto, Ontario to a woman that did not want him. He was adopted shortly thereafter but by age one he had developed Retinoblastoma and lost his sight completely within a few months.
By age three he started to learn guitar as part of his therapy and he developed his signature style of playing by placing the guitar flat in front of him, much like a steel guitar.
Along the way he met Joe Rickman (Bass) and Tom Stephen (Drums) and together they formed the Jeff Healey Band.
He became so precise and innovative with his fingering and strum patterns that most guitar players were in awe of him. George Harrison and Jeff Lynne were so impressed with him that they played guitar and sang back up vocals on some of his records including a cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.
Over his career he released six albums and fifteen singles apart from the album singles.
Jeff passed away from Lung Cancer in 2007 but his legacy lives on in a Canadian initiative to help disabled children to learn to play musical instruments and in a club in Toronto called “Roadhouse Blues Club” that helps young Canadian Blues bands get their start.
Jeff leaves behind his wife Christie Hall and two boys.
