Mashmakhan from I’lle Perrot, Quebec. In 1960 Pierre Senecal, Jim Nuchter, Brian Edwards and Ray Blake formed The Phantoms and over the next couple of years, they became the Ray Blake Combo and then the Domino’s.
Again in 1965 they changed their name to The Triangle and signed on to be the backup band to Trevor Payne (another great Montreal R&B singer) and the group was content for the next three years.
Then in 1968 Columbia Records offered them a contract as a solo act and with the well wishes of Trevor Payne they broke out on their own. They changed their name to MashmaKhan which was a brand of Hashish sold by a local dealer.
Pierre Senecal penned ‘As The Years Go By’ and when the album was released it sold 100,000 copies in Canada and 400,000 in the U.S. plus another million copies worldwide.
The music industry as a whole stopped and listened and went, “What the … well you know”.
The track helped to change the direction of music and opened the door to almost every musical incantation of songs that came along in the seventies.
By 1971 the group was experiencing disagreements with musical direction and by 1972 the group disbanded and members joined the Lisa Hartt Band and April Wine.
