He is a Singer, Song-writer, Producer and is known for his Sonic Versatility and dark Lyricism. 

His Music explores Escapism, Romance, Melancholia and is often inspired by his personal experiences.

His real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye.

Born and raised in Toronto,  Abel became interested in a music  career watching Much Music  everyday after school.

He released some songs on Youtube and it attracted Canadian Producer David Rose who produced three songs written by Abel.

On a promise to give David Rose credit. Abel released them on YouTube which attracted the attention of ” Drake ” another Canadian and Toronto native. Drake began producing Abel along with David Rose.

In the beginning he used the names ” The Noise ”  and ” Kin Kane.” Abel settled on  ” The Weeknd ” without the E because that is when most people Party.

To date Abel has won 15 Juno Awards, Four Grammys,

Six American Music Awards, Nineteen Billboard Music Awards, Two MTV Video Awards and an Academy Award Nomination.
