The GoGo’s were formed at Los Angeles, California in 1978.

Five girls that played their own instruments, wrote their own songs and created a stir among those who followed them as a fun loving on stage  group.

Belinda Carlisle ( Lead Vocals )

Jane Wiedlin  ( Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Songwriting )

Charlotte Caffey (  Lead Guitar, Keyboards )

Kathy Valentine ( Bass )

Gina Shock ( Drums )

IRS Records signed the band because the owner thought that it would be good to have a female band who played their own instruments and people seemed their punkish stage performances..

They were sent to New York to record and while in session, the engineer asked them to slow down their play ( feel their music, let it play out ) and the result was a ” POP ” sound that actually made them famous.

They were sent out on tour as the opening act for ” The Police “.

The Police thought that they were a refreshing opening act, and they became good friends.

As the tour progressed the GoGo’s Album hit number one on the charts the Police album was at 6th place. To the credit of  ” The Police, they kept the GoGo’s as their opening act for the remainder of the tour.

The GoGo’s were a solid act and gave many female bands  a road map to follow.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Money, Fame, Drugs and the fact that Belinda as the Lead singer was getting all the publicity created jealousy and arguments. Jane who actually wrote most of the songs wanted to sing some of them on the albums.

By 1985 the group had broken up .Then in 1990 they reformed recorded an album and went back on the road. They recorded another album and the band stayed together for a tour. The arguments backstage took a toll on the band but it never affected their on stage performance.

On stage they were always professional.

In 1997  Gina Shock ( Drums ) sued the band for  Money that she said was owed to her.

Jane recorded some albums. Belinda recorded some albums, both with very moderate success.

Their second breakup was 2000 and ten years later 2010 the band went on a reunion tour to great success as fans anted to see them.

In 2013  Kathy Valentine ( Bass ) sued the band for  Money that she said was owed to her.

In 2016 they formed again for a second ” Farewell Tour “

It seems that the tour did them some good as they recorded another album released in July 2020 and they were planning a tour, but then Covid 19.

This song “Club Zero ” is the first release in twenty years that the band has recorded new music.

There is a chemistry that combines and glue’s an act together and all the Money, Fame, Drugs and Outside Voices can tear a group apart. None of it is important… except the work and the ” We are Family ”  attitude. ( Sister’s , if you will. )

I think the  GoGo’s  have learned that lesson.

If you get a chance to see the GoGo’s , I suggest that you buy a ticket. They’re just good.

Enjoy
