Martha and the Muffins were formed in Toronto, Ontario.
Dave Millar (guitar) and Mark Gane (guitar) were studying at The Ontario College of Art when they decided to form a band to earn money on the weekends and have some fun.
They added Martha Johnson (keyboards, vocals) as well as Tim Gane (drums). Within a week they added Carl Finkle (bass) and a month after that the group added Andy Haas (saxophone) and Martha Ladly (keyboardist).
The group was set and began playing around Toronto and the surrounding area.
They choose the name Martha and the Muffins because they wanted a softer name than the hard names of their New Wave contemporaries.
As well they had two Marathas in the band and Martha Johnson was their lead singer. Later on, the group added a third female Jocelyne Lanois sister of producer Danioel Lanois to play bass and piano.
The group signed with DINDISC a sub-division of Virgin Records and released their first single “Insect Love”. The record did well on Canadian charts and Virgin Records produced their first album “Metro Music”. The album which contained “Echo Beach” blasted through the Billboard charts and sent the band on a U.K. and U.S. tour.
The band has been performing steadily except for a short time when the group exhausted by the road took time away to rest and ‘get the heads on straight’ before they decided to get back on the road.
To date the band has released eight albums and continues to tour.
Enjoy
