Ian Tyson was born at Vancouver B.C. in 1933 and learned to play guitar while recuperating from a fall.

In the 1950’s he moved to Toronto to pursue a singing career.

Sylvia Fricker was born at Chatham, Ontario in 1940.  She always had a passion for singing and moved to Toronto to pursue her own singing career.

Both were singing in the various clubs in and around Toronto and eventually everyone meets everyone else.

In a short while they realized that their voices mixed well and they formed the duo Ian and Sylvia.

In 1962 they went to New York and became part of the Greenwich Village music scene which included the likes of Bob Dylan.

By 1964 they married and their music career exploded with number one hits and other artists clamouring for their songs.

In 1966 they moved to Nashville for two years learning and developing their writing style.

By this time Ian was writing and turning out songs at a phenomenal rate. Sylvia penned ‘You were on my Mind’ which was also recorded by the We Five.

This track ‘Four Strong Winds’ was penned by Ian and has become the quintessential Western Canadian song.

The song is as Canadian as you can get. Absolutely beautiful in sound and composition.

Ian and Sylvia began recording songs by an up and coming Canadian song writer named Gordie Lightfoot who would become a world superstar in his own right.

In their career Ian and Sylvia recorded thirteen albums and had numerous number one hits.

They divorced in 1975 and the duo ended at the same time.

Today, Sylvia lives in Ontario spending her time writing songs and books.

Ian lives in Alberta, spending half his year touring and singing Traditional Country and Western music and the other half of the year spending time on his ranch.

As a duo they made fans all around the world. They re-unite once in a while for a music special, such as this particular video.
