The Eagles were formed in Los Angeles in 1971.
Glenn Frey (lead, rhythm guitar, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (lead guitar, mandolin, violin, piano, vocals) and Randy Meisner (bass, guitar, vocals).
Their first hit was “Take it Easy” and the band started on a journey that would make The Eagles the best-selling U.S. band in musical history.
Their greatest hits album sold 26 Million copies by itself. Total U.S. sales were 120 million plus another 100 million worldwide. all of these sales are based on seven albums.
In 1977 Bernie Leadon left the band, saying that he wanted to expand his musical category.
He was replaced by Don Felder (lead guitar, vocals). Don is considered one of the premier guitarists in the world.
The band then added Joe Walsh as an extra guitarist.
This was not without problems as Joe, had a drinking problem and liked the throw hotel furniture over the balcony, plus other things.
Two years later Randy Meisner left the band, saying his voice was straining and that he could not hit the notes he needed, to complete certain songs. Glenn Frey and Randy were into a heated argument about his leaving and in the end Randy just quit.
Timothy B. Schmidt was hired to replace Randy on bass with the added bonus that Tim could sing all Randy’s songs with the same pitch.
For the next tree years, the band hummed along (not without drinking and drug problems) and then suddenly disbanded.
Classic Radio is attributed to saving The Eagles music. Their songs were playing seven days a week all over the world and most people did not realize that the band had disbanded.
Demand for a tour was so high that by 1994 the group re-assembled and went on a worldwide tour that garnered the band more money and fame than they ever imagined.
Don Felder and Glenn Frey were arguing continually and at one point got into a heated argument on stage in the middle of a concert.
Don left the band in 2001, stating, “that he could not continue under the present conditions”.
Enter Stuart Smith, a multi instrument musician who learned all their songs in a month. An experienced studio musician, he fit into the band immediately.
All members of the band were Inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Glenn Frey passed away in 2015 from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.
“Hotel California” is about the dark underbelly of the ‘American Dream’ and about excess in America.
“Tiffany Twisted” refers to Tiffany’s Jewelry in New York and how you can end up chasing glitter.
“Mercedes bends” is a masterful line meaning “Deep thought”. It is not the car Mercedes Benz.
The band is still on the Road.
