Hank Snow is from Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
In 1926 Hank signed on a fishing schooner and with his first cheque of $58.00 he sent away for a ‘Guitar and Chord Book’ – Total cost: $5.95 from the T. Eaton company in Montreal.
By 1928, Hank was performing on radio and by 1933 he was the opening act in movie theatres in Halifax and surrounding areas, which brought him to the attention of CBC National Radio which made him a household name in Canada.
By 1936, he recorded his first song “The Prisoned Cowboy” and this began a long session of recordings and hits across Canada.
From 1939 until 1945, Hank entertained Canadian and U.S. Troops and gave up some lucrative opportunities to perform for the troops.
In 1945 Hank was asked to move to Nashville and to record there, where he became a staple of ‘The Grand Ole Opry’.
Hank was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the U.S. Country Hall of Fame.
Hank always continued to acknowledge his Canadian roots until his passing in 1999.
Canadian artists and song writers have always been at the forefront of U.S. Country Music.
