In 1978 a group of young female musician thought that it was about time that women should be considered as important as all these male groups that were receiving all the musical glory.

Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar, vocals), Charlotte Caffey (drums, guitar, keyboards), Gina Shock (lead guitar) and Kathy Valentine (bass).

By 1981 the band released their first album “Beauty and the Beat”.

The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 Chart for six weeks. The band became an overnight sensation in North America.

The Go Go’s were the first female band to write all of their own music.

The group started out to be a Rock Band but ended up being a New Wave Band with simple uncomplicated tracks, but always with energy and a sense of fun in all of their songs.

As many groups before and after them the success they acquired brought about friction within the group as Belinda Carlisle received most of the attention as she was the lead singer. (I always had a small crush on Belinda.)

In 1985 both Carlisle and Shock left the band as they felt that The Go Go’s had reached their apex.

Carlisle had a medium solo career with some success as her albums sold well but not fabulously. Shock went through a series of bands before suing The Go Go’s for monies not received for songs that she had penned.

Jane Wiedlin had a small success with some solo albums backed by Caffey and Valentine.

By 1999 the band re-formed leaving all their troubles in the past.

The group still tours with a retro-spectate of their early successes with some new tunes just to flavour their concerts.
