Lucille Starr was born Lucille Marie Raymonde Savoie at St, Boniface, Manitoba. Her family moved to the Francophone community of Port Coquitlam / Maillardeville British Columbia when her dad needed to find work.
At an early age she learned to play guitar, bass and mandolin and singing and music were always important at gatherings and local events and which led her to think about making a career in music.
While working on the road she met her husband Bob Regan a country singer, and as they say nature and chemistry took over. Together they formed a duet called The Canadian Sweethearts. It was at this point that she changed her name from Savoie to Starr because she thought it would sound more professional and that she wanted to be a star.
Travelling across the U.S. they met Herb Albert who was so taken with the duo that he introduced them to his record Label in Los Angeles. Herb orchestrated the arrangement on ‘The French Song’ to make a smooth transition from French to English.
‘The French Song’ sold millions across the world and took Lucille and her husband around the world. She became a fan favourite everywhere (including a guy named Jim from somewhere in Quebec).
In Holland the song won every major award that the Dutch Music industry had to offer.
A musical ‘Back to You’ was written and performed for many years about her life and music.
Lucille was the first Canadian singer to sell one million records. She was the first female singer to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of fame.
Today, at age 78, she no longer tours but will on occasion sing at special events.
The City of Port Coquitlam B.C. named a street in her honour – “Lucille Starr Way”.
She still makes her home in British Columbia. Proud to be Canadian.
‘The French Song’ is as close to perfect as a Canadian song can be.
