Kate and Anna McGarrigle were born in Montreal, Quebec and attended school there but the family moved to Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts in the Laurentian Mountains, just North West of Montreal.
The family was very musical and music was always instilled into them every day of their upbringing.
Kate studied engineering at McGill University. Anna studied art at Ecole des Beaux Art de Montreal.
Always playing music they formed a Quartet with Jack Nissenson and Peter Weldon called the Mountain City Four and went out on the folk music circuit from 1963 to 1967.
After the group disbanded, they settled into song writing and their music was covered and in demand by such artists as Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Judy Collins,
Cyndi Lauper and the acclaimed Nana Mouskouri, to name just a few of the artists from all over the world asking the McGarrigles to write a song for them.
To date the McGarrigles released thirteen albums by themselves and fifteen other albums as duets with other artists.
They have a distinctive sound and fans just love them.
They were awarded the Order of Canada and the Governor General’s Performing Arts award.
