From Casablanca (Warner Brothers, 1942)

Thoughts on the song from mainly because I just watched Casablanca for the 87th time and I wanted to see if everything worked before it went live. It does!

Rick (Humphrey Bogart): You played it for her, you can play it for me!

Sam (Dooley Wilson): [lying] Well, I don’t think I can remember…

Rick: If she can stand it, I can! Play it!

Rick never told Sam to ‘Play it again’. That’s a musical myth. Rick just stared into the darkness of his gin joint holding tightly his glass of whiskey with his drunken blood shot eyes and said. “If she can stand it, I can! Play it!

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then Google Casablanca. No, better still. Find it somewhere. And watch it.

Disclaimer: Don’t get your knickers in a knot. You are not losing your sight. The movie was intentionally filmed in Black & White. That last comment was for the younger generation.

“As Time Goes By” is a song written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931. It became famous when it was featured in the 1942 Warner Bros film Casablanca performed by Dooley Wilson as Sam. The song was voted No. 2 on the AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs special, commemorating the best songs in film (only surpassed by “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland). (Which makes sense). The song has since become the signature tune of Warner Bros and used as such in the production logos at the beginning of many Warner Bros films since 1999, as well as the closing logos to most Warner Bros Television shows since 2003. It was also the title and theme song of the 1990s British romantic comedy series As Time Goes By.

The AFI listed it among its “top 100” movie songs. National Public Radio included it in its “NPR 100”, a 1999 list of the most important American musical works of the 20th century as compiled by NPR’s music editors. The song is a popular reflection of nostalgia and often used in films and series reflecting this feeling.

Dooley Wilson Playing It Again – As Time Goes By

Fun Fact 1: There have been 94 covers of ‘As Time Goes By’.

Fun Fact 2: Woody Allen in 1969 wrote a Broadway play “Play It Again, Sam” which became such a hit that it was turned into a move in 1972. Woody plays a divorced (but isn’t he always divorced or single in his films) writer channeling Bogie (played by Jerry Lacy) for love advice and who could be better than Bogie at love advice?

Fun Fact 3: Manchester Orchestra is an American indie rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 2004. In 2005 they wrote “Play It Again, Sam. You Don’t Have Any Feathers”. Which has nothing to do with Sam, Casablanca, Playing or Feathers? None of those things are mentioned in the song. Cheating!

Disclaimer: it’s not very good. That last warning is for listeners of all ages.

Here is the song. You be the judge, jury and excellent listener!
